Elected 2021

Dr. Stitziel is Professor of Medicine and Genetics at Washington University School of Medicine and a member of the Scientific Leadership Council of the McDonnell Genome Institute. He received his BA in Mathematics and Physics from Washington University and his MD and PhD degrees from the University of Illinois. He completed residency in the University of Chicago’s Physician Scientist Training Program followed by a fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Broad Institute and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Stitziel joined the faculty of the Washington University School of Medicine in 2012. As a cardiologist and human geneticist, his work focuses on the inherited basis of cardiovascular disease in humans in order to identify and validate novel therapeutic targets. Using a variety of techniques in statistical genetics, high-throughput genomics, and traditional molecular biology, his laboratory has mapped novel genes and causal pathways underlying both Mendelian and complex forms of cardiovascular disease. His group also looks to apply insights from human genetic studies to improve patient care. In parallel to his research, Dr. Stitziel directs the Center for Cardiovascular Genetics at Washington University, an outpatient clinic focused on the diagnosis and treatment of inherited forms of cardiovascular disease.
