Benjamin Levi, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He holds the Dr. Lee Hudson-Robert R. Penn Chair in Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and serves as Division Chief of Burn, Trauma, Acute and Critical Care Surgery. He specializes in acute and reconstructive burn surgery and scar reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Levi earned his medical degree at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He completed a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Michigan Hospital. He received advanced training through a research fellowship in regenerative medicine at Stanford University and a clinical fellowship in surgical critical care and burn surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Shriners Hospitals for Children – Boston.

Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Levi joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2020. Previously, he was Director of the Burn/Wound and Regenerative Medicine Laboratory and Associate Director of Burn Surgery Service at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Levi’s research interests, which are funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American College of Surgeons, and the Department of Defense, include stem cell biology, heterotopic ossification, muscle fibrosis, wound healing and repair. He leads the Center for Organogenesis and Trauma (CORT) at UT Southwestern which is a science/translational research program with a focus on organogenesis and the response to trauma. In his laboratory and reseearch program, Dr. Levi implements processes to establish positive culture with an emphasis on collaboration, connection, wellness and diversity. This includes weekly lab walks, resilience training, relentless community service and precision mentorship programs.
