Dr. Matheny is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Informatics with secondary appointments in Medicine and Biostatistics and Co-Directs the Center for Improving Patient’s Health with Informatics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Within the Department of Veterans Affairs, he is a Health Services Research and Development Informatics Research Scientist, the Associate Director of HSR&D VINCI Resource Center, and Associate Director of VA Medical Informatics Fellowship at Tennessee Valley Healthcare System VA. He is a practicing primary care provider and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Clinical Informatics. He earned his MD from the University of Kentucky, an MS in Informatics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an MPH from Harvard University. He is an elected fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Medical Informatics. Dr. Matheny has published over 100 manuscripts in journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. He is a nationally recognized investigator in in predictive analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence, automated medical device surveillance, and natural language processing. He is currently funded by VA HSR&D, NIDDK, NHLBI, and FDA.
