Dr. Khabele is a Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Cancer Biology. Dr. Khabele is one of a few clinically active gynecologic oncologists who also leads an ovarian cancer translational research program. Her lab takes a bi-directional translational research approach to develop novel drug combinations and new diagnostic markers for ovarian cancer. The lab is in a unique position to use de-identified clinically annotated tissue samples and patient-derived xenograft models to validate molecular biomarkers and to validate mechanistic results for further testing in the clinic. Dr. Khabele’s scientific and scholarly work advances not only the field of gynecologic oncology, but also the fields of women’s health, cancer epigenetics and cancer research. Dr. Khabele serves on multiple medical and scientific advisory boards, including the National Institutes of Health, the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, the Foundation for Women’s Cancer, and Ovarcome. She is firmly committed to mentoring and training the next generation of physicians and scientists and is the founding fellowship director of the first ACGME-accredited gynecologic oncology fellowship program in the state of Kansas. As an advocate, she is dedicated to raising awareness about women’s cancers and cancer health disparities.
