Dr. Chen is a radiation oncologist who specializes in the treatment of genitourinary cancer patients. Dr. Chen received his MD and Master of Public Health degrees from Harvard University, and completed residency at the Harvard Radiation Oncology Program. He is Associate Professor and Associate Director of Education and Training at the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Centder.

Dr. Chen is a health services researcher whose work focuses on inter-related themes of observational big data research, quality of life, and survivorship in cancer patients. His research has used data from large cancer registries, insurance claims, large/population-based patient cohorts, and linkages of different datasets. These studies have described national practice patterns, use and misuse of technology, cancer care quality and disparities, cost, and comparative effectiveness of different treatment options. Several studies have led to incorporation into clinical practice guidelines and/or policy changes. Dr. Chen assesses quality of life outcomes in many of his studies, and leads efforts to incorporate quality of life outcomes in large, national and international clinical trials. His research also focuses on cancer survivors after completing treatment -- looking for opportunities to improve the cancer-related and non-cancer-related health care, and overall health, of cancer survivors.
