Dr. Bernd Schnabl is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California San Diego. After receiving his M.D., he carried out postdoctoral research at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine; this was followed by a Gastroenterology fellowship at Columbia University in New York City. Dr. Schnabl’s laboratory pioneered work describing the intestinal microbiome associated with liver disease in preclinical models and patients. His lab is leading the research field in investigating functional consequences of dysbiosis for chronic liver diseases. As physician-scientist he was able to confirm preclinical results in patients emphasizing the importance of his translational research career. His efforts lead to a proof of concept that precision microbiome approaches can prevent chronic liver disease. As independent investigator, he has consistently maintained funding both from foundation grants and from the NIH.
