Biographical statement

Andrew Pieper graduated from Earlham College majoring in Biology and Chemistry, and then earned his MD and PhD degrees from Johns Hopkins University. His PhD was in Neuroscience, under the mentorship of Solmon H. Snyder, and focused on mechanisms of cell death.  Andrew is devoted to a career in patient care and basic science research applied to neuropsychiatric disease.  He is currently Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, and staff psychiatrist at the Iowa City VA Health Care System. His research centers around identifying novel therapeutic approaches for treating neuropsychiatric disease, and is exemplified by the discovery and development of the P7C3-class of neuroprotective aminopropyl carbazoles.
