Biographical statement

Dr. Winkelmayer is a clinical nephrologist and a leading investigator focusing on comparative effectiveness and drug safety research. His studies draw from large disease registries, insurance claims, and electronic health records databases to generate clinically actionable findings in areas where solid evidence is lacking. He is best known for his work on the treatment of anemia and of cardiovascular disease in patients with advanced kidney disease or end-stage renal disease. Originally from Vienna, Austria, where he received his Medical Doctorate, he holds a Master of Public Health degree in Health Care Management and a Doctor of Science degree in Health Policy, both from the Harvard School of Public Health. Having spent 8 years on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and 5 years at Stanford University School of Medicine, he is now the Gordon A. Cain Chair in Nephrology and Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. His professional "hobby" is scientific publishing. He is an Associate Editor of JAMA, a past Co-Editor of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, and serves on several other Editorial Boards. He is also a Co-Chair of Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes, the leading guideline organization on kidney health.
