Elected 2015

Dr. Bangalore’s interests are in comparative effectiveness studies for cardiovascular diseases, particularly stable ischemic heart disease, acute coronary syndromes and hypertension. He is the Principal Investigator of the ISCHEMIA CKD trial funded by the NIH/NHLBI, which is a multicenter randomized clinical trial designed to assess whether an initial invasive strategy of cardiac catheterization reduces the risk of cardiovascular events when compared with a conservative strategy of optimal medical therapy alone, in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease and ischemia on stress testing. In addition, he is the director of the cardiovascular outcomes group involved in outcomes based research with the use of the use of electronic health records, state and national registries, administrative/claims databases and systematic reviews/meta analyses. Dr. Bangalore has received grants from the National Institutes of Health, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, American Heart Association and from the industry. Dr. Bangalore’s research focus has been on coronary stents, evaluating the implications of stent design (strut thickness and strut material) on outcomes, evaluating the efficacy and safety of currently approved bare metal and drug eluting stents and has challenged the widely accepted paradigm of bare metal stents being the index for safety. In addition, his research has focused on blood pressure targets in patients with hypertension, the utility of beta blockers for various indications and also on renal artery denervation for treatment resistant hypertension.
