My research investigates mechanisms by which chronic injury and cell death contribute to disease, focusing on the liver as a prototypical organ in which injury and inflammation are main determinants of disease progression. To tackle this question, my laboratory investigates how molecular patterns including PAMPs and DAMPs affect inflammation, regeneration, fibrogenesis, and carcinogenesis in the liver. A second focus of the lab is to determine links between liver cancer and fibrosis, a condition that is present in 80% of patients with liver cancer. To tackle these questions, we employ genetic tracking methods and cell-specific knockout strategies in the PAMP/DAMP pathway and in hepatic stellate cells, the main fibrogenic cell type of the liver.
