Elected 2012

Dr. Lorraine Ware is Professor of Medicine and Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. She received her BA from Claremont McKenna College, and her MD from Johns Hopkins University where she also completed internal medicine residency. She subsequently undertook fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care at UCSF and the UCSF Cardiovascular Research Institute before joining the faculty at Vanderbilt in 2002 as a physician-scientist. Her comprehensive bench-to-bedside research program centers on the pathogenesis and treatment of sepsis and acute lung injury with a focus on mechanisms of lung epithelial and endothelial oxidative injury by cell-free hemoglobin. She is passionate about training the next generation of physician scientists.  As the director of the Vanderbilt Medical Scholars Program, a year-out research program for medical students, she helps to match students with scientific mentors for one-year research projects with a goal of fostering an enduring interest in biomedical research. As the recipient of an NHLBI K24 Award in Patient-Oriented Research and co-director of a T32 program, she devotes substantial time to research mentoring for physicians-in-training including medical students, residents and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom have gone on to successful careers as independently-funded physician scientists. She is also strongly committed to maintaining the high quality of our biomedical research journals in the face of major changes in scientific publishing. In addition to several editorial board memberships, she served for nine years as Associate and Senior Associate Editor for the American Journal of Physiology--Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology
