Elected 2011
My current research is focused on normal and cancer stem cell biology. My laboratory identified tumor-initiating cells in the plasma cell malignancy multiple myeloma in 2004. We have subsequently found that these cells share several cellular processes with normal stem cells that regulate their self-renewal and drug resistance. Recently, we have expanded these studies and studied human pancreatic cancers and normal hematopoiesis. In addition to these basic studies, the lab also focuses on translational research and the development of novel therapies that target cancer stem cells in hematologic malignancies. More than a dozen clinical trials have been initiated based on these preclinical studies.
