Biographical statement

Dr. Leung is a Professor of Pediatrics and Chair of the Department of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy at the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and University of Tennessee. His research program focuses on the use of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and immunotherapy for the treatment of unfavorable risk childhood cancer. Research areas include the epidemiology of late effects of cellular therapy and laboratory investigations of NK cell biology and transplantation. His model of KIR-HLA receptor-ligand mismatch and NK cell typing methodologies are used by many bone marrow transplant centers for donor selection and disease prognostication. His novel approach to NK cell transplantation is particularly promising for drug-resistant cancer and has been used to cure high-risk infant leukemia, pediatric acute myeloid leukemia, and neuroblastoma. The goal of his cellular therapy program is to improve the survival rates of childhood cancer without the risk of late effects associated with conventional cancer treatment.
