Elected 2009
Dr. Kim's research is focused on magnetic resonance techniques to assess cardiovascular pathophysiology, particularly the differentiation of reversible from irreversible myocardial injury. His work involves multiple approaches: from development of new technology such as novel pulse sequences, to in-vivo testing in animal models, to translational studies in humans validating clinical utility. He is one of the inventors of the Delayed Enhancement MRI technique, which is considered to be the imaging reference standard for the in vivo assessment of myocardial viability, infarction, and scarring. His work has also focused on processes occurring in myocardial hibernation, stunning, and nonischemic cardiomyopathy. More recently, Dr. Kim has completed the first multicenter trial evaluating an imaging strategy for the diagnosis and assessment of myocardial infarction. Additionally, several multicenter trials are currently underway testing the role of these newly developed MRI techniques in a variety of clinical settings with the hope that these methods will lead to improved clinical diagnosis and management.
