Elected 2006
Dr. Tu received his clinical training in general internal medicine at the University of Toronto, and his research training in clinical epidemiology at the University of Toronto and in health policy at Harvard University. He joined the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and the University of Toronto as an Assistant Professor in 1996. His research career has focused on the use of large population-based clinical and administrative databases to measure and improve the quality of cardiac care delivered in Canada. He has led several major research initiatives in Canada including the development of the Canadian Cardiovascular Outcomes Research Team (CCORT), a national team of over 30 researchers from across Canada, who are working together on a series of projects to measure and improve cardiac care in Canada (www.ccort.ca). The CCORT group has developed national acute myocardial infarction (AMI)/congestive heart failure (CHF) quality indicators and produced the first CCORT Canadian Cardiovascular Atlas, a series of 24 peer-reviewed journals in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology that document variations in patterns of cardiac care across Canada. Dr. Tu is also the principal investigator for the Enhanced Feedback for Effective Cardiac Treatment (EFFECT) study, the first cluster randomized trial evaluating the utility of public report cards for improving AMI/CHF care. Dr. Tu and the CCORT Team received the 2005 Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) National Knowledge Translation Award in recognition of their efforts at successfully translating clinical research into clinical practice and health policy at the national level in Canada.
