Smita Bhatia’s research is focused primarily on issues related to long-term complications among survivors of cancer, with a special interest in second cancers. She is responsible for constructing and maintaining a national centralized database of adverse events, such as second cancers, cardiovascular events and avascular necrosis, developing among children treated on Children’s Oncology Group therapeutic protocols, with the aim of testing the hypothesis that genetic predisposition plays an important role in the development of these events. She is also conducting a comprehensive evaluation of long-term complications among survivors of bone marrow transplantation, with a special interest in the molecular pathogenesis of therapy-related myelodysplasia among patients undergoing autologous transplantation for lymphoma. She is also the recipient of the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society Scholar Award in Clinical Research. She is the Chair of the Children’s Oncology Group Late Effects Committee, and in that capacity, is responsible for coordination, facilitation, initiation and conduct of research activities focusing on late effects of childhood cancer.
