Paul Frenette is currently Director and Chair of the Ruth L. and David S. Gottesman Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He received his medical degree at Laval University and then completed internal medicine residency training at McGill University. He then went to Boston for a fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at Tuft’s New England Medical Center and research training at Harvard Medical School and MIT. His research interests have focused on the stem cell microenvironment and also in vascular biology in sickle cell disease. His laboratory has uncovered the critical role of the sympathetic nervous system in the regulation of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) egress from their niches, followed by groundbreaking discovery elucidating circadian rhythmicity in HSC release. His laboratory has recently identified mesenchymal stem cells as a novel candidate stem cell niche in the bone marrow. Dr. Frenette has served on the editorial boards of Blood and JCI, the Medical Advisory Board of the New York Stem Cell Foundation, as chair of a scientific committee of the American Society of Hematology, and on the Sickle Cell Advisory Council of National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and multiple other panels at the NIH. In addition to ASCI, he was elected to the Association of American Physicians (2010).
